San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, 36, became the 17th major leaguer to hit 500 home runs when he delivered a drive into San Francisco Bay on Tuesday night. With the Giants trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1, Bonds hit a two-run homer off Terry Adams in the eighth inning, giving San Francisco a 3-2 win over the opposing team. The ball splashed into Willie McCovey Cove beyond the right-field fence. Bonds rounded the bases and jumped with both feet on home plate before embracing his father, former major leaguer Bobby Bonds. The crowd went wild, the left-field fence opened up, and former Giants Willie Mays and McCovey -- both also members of the 500 club -- were escorted by golf cart to a ceremony at home plate, reports the Associated Press. "First of all," announced Bonds, "I'd like to thank my parents for having me." Mays, who is also Bonds's godfather, hit 660 homers, third on the career list behind Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714).
