Eminem: No Contest

For the second time in two weeks, Eminem pleaded no contest to charges against him. On Monday in Oakland County, Mich., the 28-year-old rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, faced charges of carrying a concealed weapon (a possible five-year felony) and of brandishing a firearm in public (a misdemeanor). These stemmed from a June 3, 2000 argument with the road manager of the band Insane Clown Posse outside a Michigan stereo store. Sentencing is now scheduled for June 5. "We're very happy that the judge treated Mr. Mathers as she would treat any other defendant that appears before her," Eminem's attorney told reporters after the hearing. The no-contest plea was seen as a probable way to prevent jail time for the musician, said the lawyer. On April 10, Eminem was sentenced to two years' probation for carrying a concealed weapon during a June 4, 2000 brawl in a Detroit-area nightclub parking lot. He allegedly pistol-whipped a man he saw kissing his wife, Kim.
