By New York Ranger Wayne Gretzy, the 1,072nd goal of his professional hockey career, Monday night, at Madison Square Garden as the Rangers defeated the Islanders 3-1. The record goal (which won't be official, because the National Hockey League doesn't recognize the World Hockey Association, for whom Gretzy played one season) broke the total scored by Gordie Howe, Gretzy's boyhood idol.
