Timothy Boomer, 25, nicknamed "the cursing canoeist" after he let loose with a stream of profanities when he fell out of his canoe on a Michigan lake last summer (thus violating an 1897 state law against cussing in front of children), to perform four days of community service and either pay a $75 fine or spend three days in jail. His sentence is on hold while the ACLU (which contends Boomer's free speech was violated) assists with his appeal.
