In Zurich, Switzerland, an 18th-century violin owned by the late musician Yehudi Menuhin for an undisclosed price. A dealer said the 1742 Guarneri del Gesu was bought by an unidentified collector for $1.25 million above what had ever been paid for a violin. Last year Christie's in London said it sold a Stradivarius violin for a then-record $1.58 million.
