WWF star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, 34, is on the mend at a San Antonio hospital after spinal surgery to correct years of body slamming. Dr. Lloyd Youngblood, Methodist Hospital's chief of neurosurgery, said Austin could be out of commission for six months to a year . . . David Letterman, 52, emerged from his quintuple heart bypass surgery on Friday with his sense of humor intact. "In addition to rerouting the arteries," Dave said from his bed at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, "they also installed an E-Z pass" for paying bridge and tunnel tolls. His convalescence is expected to take another six to eight weeks. CBS will run repeats of "Late Show" in the meantime, but just imagine the ratings for his big return.
