The Beastie Boys have been sued for copyright infringement by University of California music professor and renowned jazz flutist James W. Newton. The piece in question, Newton's 1982 "Choir," appears more than 40 times in "Pass the Mic," a song on the Beastie Boys' best-selling 1992 CD "Check Your Head," the federal lawsuit claims. The Beasties allegedly got permission from the record company for its use, but not from Newton. He is seeking $1.8 million.
