New York's Cardinal John O'Connor, 80, who for 16 years as the city's top Roman Catholic cleric used his warmth and wit to champion Vatican stances opposing birth control and homosexuality, died Wednesday night. He had been in failing health since undergoing surgery last August for a brain tumor.
