Donald Duck's Wrangler Dies

11/05/1997 at 12:00 AM EST

Disney illustrator Carl Barks, 99, who was credited with giving Donald Duck a kindler, gentler personality (he also created Scrooge McDuck, Donald's tightfisted Scottish relative) died on Friday after waging a battle with leukemia. Leaving the studio in 1966, Barks continued to paint Disney figures in oil at his home in Grants Pass, Ore., until his health failed him.
