Lachlan Murdoch, 29, the eldest son of media baron Rupert Murdoch, 69, has been named deputy chief operating officer -- the No. 3 position -- at his father's News Corporation, the company announced Thursday. Lachlan has long been seen as his father's heir apparent. The conglomerate owns, among other assets, 20th Century Fox, Fox Television and HarperCollins publishers. Of his new job, "I like to get my hands dirty and roll up my sleeves," the younger Murdoch (who was based partly in Australia and partly in New York) told The New York Times, which reports that he will probably get a house or apartment in Los Angeles.
