Steinem's Place in History

10/29/1997 at 12:00 AM EST

Ms. Magazine founder and recent bride Gloria Steinem, 66, donated her papers to her alma mater (class of 1956), Smith College in Northampton, Mass., over the weekend, at a ceremony that honored her and other 20th century feminists, reports the Associated Press. Steinem said she thought that the memorabilia (about 300 boxes that date back to 1940) will help erase some misconceptions surrounding her and the Women's Movement. Asked specifically what she hoped scholars would gain from her papers, Steinem (who last month married South African-born entrepreneur David Bale, 61) replied, "Accuracy would be nice."
