Overweight Girl Goes Home

10/22/1997 at 12:00 AM EDT

Anamarie Martinez-Regino, the 3-year-old Albuquerque girl who was at the center of controversy when on Aug. 25 she was taken away from her parents and into state custody because she weighed 120 pounds, will be returned to her folks, a judge ruled yesterday. A state social worker had forced the child's removal from her parents' house, claiming that Adela Martinez and Miguel Regino had neglected to properly monitor Anamarie's diet and exercise regime. The parents have defended their treatment of their only child, claiming that Anamarie's size was tied to a medical condition. Doctors have found no such condition, reports the Associated Press.
