Louisiana Legend Dies

10/20/1997 at 12:00 AM EDT

Jimmie H. Davis, who was known as Louisiana's "Singing Governor" because he relied on his vocal pipes to charm voters, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Baton Rouge, his former press secretary, Ed Reed, told the Associated Press. Davis had served two terms, from 1944-48 and 1960-64. "It's a sad day for Louisiana," said current state Gov. Mike Foster. "An era has ended. He was a fine gentleman." And a fine singer and writer, having composed, it is estimated, some 400 songs. His most famous: "You Are My Sunshine." Davis, by the way, was probably 101, give or take a few years. He was never quite certain of his age.
