Dallas cosmetic surgeon James H. Fowler is suing ABC, "20/20" and Diane Sawyer for allegedly defaming him in a Nov. 1999 segment about untrained physicians who deform patients. Fowler, contending in his federal lawsuit that the show hurt his practice, sparked an unfounded state investigation and caused emotional distress, is seeking a jury trial for legal fees and unspecified punitive and compensatory damages. The segment with Fowler, which was captured by a hidden camera, reportedly showed him telling patients that his work had caused no serious complications, although, reports Variety, six malpractice lawsuits had been filed against him. (Five of the six cases were reportedly settled out of court.) ABC had no comment on the case.
