Gumby, Rascals Return

Does Eddie Murphy have anything to do with this? The New York Post reports that two entertainment icons, Gumby and the Little Rascals, are due back on the airwaves soon. Gumby, the green Claymation hero whom Murphy satirically imitated when the comic was still on "Saturday Night Live" in the '80s, will serve as the centerpiece of ad spots that are intended to lure viewers to ABC's summer programming. Gumby's appeal to baby boomers is being cited for the revival. As for the Little Rascals, the precocious children who starred in short film features from the '20s-'40s (among the kids: Spanky McFarland, Alfalfa Switzer and Robert Blake), American Movie Classics plans on airing Rascals' adventures starting on Aug. 6. "Malcolm in the Middle" star Frankie Muniz will host the programs. As for the Eddie Murphy connection . . . who could forget his Buckwheat?
