SMILING: Freddie Prinze Jr. (with 43% of the vote) and Britney Spears (29%) have the nation's best smiles, according to a random sampling of 400 American teenagers, ages 14-20, conducted by BriteSmile teeth whitening system. Male runners up (in order) were Heath Ledger and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Beyonce Knowles followed Spears . . . RECUPERATING: Katharine Hepburn, 94, who has been in Hartford (Conn.) Hospital since last Wednesday night, will probably be released by the weekend, a hospital spokesman said Wednesday. "She's made a lot of progress from a physical therapy standpoint." The movie legend has reported been treated for a urinary tract infection. She then required time to regain her strength, said the spokesman . . . AILING: Jerry Lewis, 75, is recuperating from a recent bout with pneumonia, reports Variety, but he is still expected to host his 36th annual Labor Day weekend Muscular Dystrophy Assn. telethon. Meanwhile, the veteran entertainer has canceled all personal appearances until then, including a scheduled Vegas stint . . . SETTLING: Timothy O. Eldredge, 53, an Indianapolis home builder accused of billing rock star John Mellencamp twice in the construction of his new home, has agreed to plead guilty to theft and pay more than $98,000 restitution, according to the Marion County Prosecutor's office. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss more serious charges related to Mellencamp's plan to build a $2.5 million home near Lake Monroe south of Bloomington, Ind. Another contractor has since built the house.
