On the day that a judge set an August 27 hearing for Paula Poundstone, her attorney on Monday announced that the comedian's drinking problem will be a factor in her defense against the child mistreatment case she is facing. "Anytime anyone abuses alcohol it clouds their judgment," attorney Steven Cron told reporters. "I can't discuss the facts of the case, but that's a given." Poundstone, 41, faces charges of perpetrating lewd acts on a child and child endangerment. L.A. County Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins advised Poundstone that the one-month delay would require her to waive her right to a speedy preliminary hearing. Poundstone lost custody of her three adopted children after she was arrested on June 27 in Malibu on three counts of committing a lewd act on a girl under the age of 14, as well as endangering two other girls and two boys. She posted $200,000 bail and has pleaded innocent. Prosecutors have refused to provide details about the case, and Kamins on Monday reiterated a court order sealing all documents to protect the children involved. Poundstone, who faces a maximum of 13 years in prison if convicted on all the charges, left the courtroom separately from her attorney and did not take questions from reporters.
