Best Story of 2001: Bride to Marry
Nicole Contos unwittingly got her 15 minutes of fame in 1997, when she partied after getting stood up at the altar. But now she's partying for real.

In 1997, New York bride-to-be Nicole Contos became front-page news worldwide -- and even had a chance to share her story with Oprah -- after the best man at her wedding showed up 20 minutes after the stalled ceremony was to have begun and announced that Contos's would-be spouse would be a no-show. ("Altared State" read the headline in PEOPLE.) Contos, who was then 27 and a kindergarten teacher in Manhattan, picked up her chin and announced to her 250 wedding guests that they should still wine, dine and dance at the swanky Essex House hotel, where the reception had already been planned. Contos danced that night too, to the disco hit, "I Will Survive." As for the cad who left her standing at the altar, British attorney Tasos Michael, then 35, he took the couple's honeymoon plane tickets and headed to Tahiti by himself. Months later he told reporters that he backed out of the wedding because Contos still cared for another guy, a story that she labeled a big, fat lie. Okay, four years later, here comes the happy ending. Contos is set to marry next month, reports The New York Times. The groom-to-be is George Liakeas, 30, whom Contos met on a blind date two years ago. And he's a doctor! The Times also reports that he's not the type to leave a woman in the lurch. Furthermore, the paper took it upon itself to inform the wandering Michael of Contos's news. "How wonderful," he replied curtly, not deigning to reveal his own current marital status.
