Fears of gathering in public places may have contributed to the fact that box office grosses seemed stunted this weekend, say industry observers. Those movies affected include the high-profile new crime comedy "Bandits," starring Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton and directed by Barry Levinson ("Rain Man"), which came in second place. "Training Day," starring Denzel Washington as a corrupt L.A. cop, narrowly held onto the top spot in its second weekend. The top 10 featured two other new releases: the critically panned "Corky Romano," a crime comedy starring "Saturday Night Live" regular Chris Kattan (it came in No. 3), and "Iron Monkey," a martial-arts adventure (No. 6). The top 12 films grossed $78.8 million, down 5.1%, but still 6.4% ahead of last year at this time, when "Meet the Parents" ruled the box office for a second weekend. This weekend's Top 10, according to studio estimates:
1. "Training Day," $13.55 million
2. "Bandits," $13.46 million
3. "Corky Romano," $9.3 million
4. "Serendipity," $9 million
5. "Don't Say a Word," $6.8 million
6. "Iron Monkey," $6 million
7. "Zoolander," $5.1 million
8. "Joy Ride," $4.9 million
9. "Max Keeble's Big Move," $4 million
10. "Hearts in Atlantis," $2.8 million
