No Respect for Birthdays
Rodney Dangerfield is honored on his 80th, suffers mild heart attack.
Originally posted Monday November 26, 2001 03:12 PM EST
Rodney Dangerfield, who turned "I don't get no respect" into a national catch phrase and made low self-esteem hip, remains hospitalized after suffering a "mild" heart attack on Thanksgiving, his 80th birthday. "Who gave me this present?" he reportedly cracked to his doctor as he was wheeled into a Beverly Hills hospital. Dangerfield had appeared in fine form on Wednesday night when he was honored on the Tonight Show by Jay Leno for his vast influence and generosity in helping younger comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Tim Allen, Roseanne, Sam Kinison and Rita Rudner. Originally named Jacob Cohen, Dangerfield was born in 1921 on Long Island, making it in show business after the age of 40. He also starred in such cult classics as "Caddyshack" and "Natural Born Killers." He will be undergoing tests today but is expected back home by midweek.
