Rosie O'Donnell did her bit for politics this weekend, hosting a $250-per-person fund-raiser Sunday for Florida Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Janet Reno, reports the Associated Press. "When I heard that she was running," O'Donnell, 39, said of the former attorney general, "I called up her office and told her I would do any and everything I can." Reno, 63, is attempting to unseat Republican incumbent Jeb Bush, brother of President George W. Bush. Asked about her chances in next November's election, Reno, who is one of five Democrats in the running, replied: "I'm going to win." Among the issues she and Reno share, said O'Donnell, who is a Miami Beach resident and a foster parent, is a commitment to helping children. "It's a big problem in the state of Florida. There are over 3,000 children today available for adoption, free for adoption in the state, in foster custody," said the talk show host and magazine magnate. "Chances are they will age out of the system, they will go right into welfare and into prison, so we need to do better for this generation of kids." Political analysts note that an alliance with O'Donnell, an outspoken critic of the National Rifle Association, could hurt Reno's chances in the gun-friendly state. As Susan MacManus, a political scientist at the University of South Florida in Tampa, told AP: "Anything that connects Reno to gun control means Democrats lose big in north Florida."
