Actors Nominate Their 2001 Favorites
Once again "A Beautiful Mind," "In the Bedroom" and "The Lord of the Rings" are duking it out for best film -- but this time, they are among the nominees selected by the Screen Actors Guild. Other nominees for that category for the 8th annual awards, announced Tuesday morning from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, were "Gosford Park" and "Moulin Rouge," according to a statement from SAG. The actors' union ceremony will be broadcast on cable network TNT on March 10. (TNT, like PEOPLE, is part of AOL Time Warner. PEOPLE is a sponsor of the event.) For the past seven years, the SAG Awards have proved an uncannily accurate barometer of who and what will capture the Oscars, at least in the acting categories. (One notable exception was last year, when Russell Crowe, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for "Gladiator," did not take the SAG Award -- though SAG's best actor, Benecio del Toro in "Traffic," did win best the Supporting Actor Oscar.) All of the Guild's roughly 98,000 active members are eligible to vote. Nominees for SAG's best performance by a male actor in a film: Russell Crowe ("A Beautiful Mind"), Kevin Kline ("Life As A House"), Sean Penn ("I Am Sam"), Denzel Washington ("Training Day") and Tom Wilkinson ("In the Bedroom"). Nominees for best female performance in a film: Halle Berry ("Monster's Ball"), Jennifer Connelly ("A Beautiful Mind") Judi Dench ("Iris"), Sissy Spacek ("In the Bedroom") and Renee Zellweger ("Bridget Jones's Diary"). In the TV categories, drama series stars up for top honors are Richard Dreyfuss ("The Education of Max Bickford"), Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue"), James Gandolfini ("The Sopranos"), Peter Krauss ("Six Feet Under") and Martin Sheen ("The West Wing"); Lorraine Bracco ("The Sopranos"), Stockard Channing ("The West Wing"), Tyne Daly ("Judging Amy"), Edie Falco ("The Sopranos"), Lauren Graham ("Gilmore Girls") and Allison Janney ("The West Wing"). Comedy TV stars: Peter Boyle ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier"), Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace"), David Hyde Pierce ("Frasier") and Ray Romano ("Everybody Loves Raymond"); Jennifer Aniston ("Friends"), Kim Cattrall ("Sex and the City"), Patricia Heaton ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), Megan Mullally ("Will & Grace") and Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex and the City").
