Queen to Pay Visit to Diana's Grave?

As part of her Golden Jubilee tour this year, reports London's Sunday Times, Queen Elizabeth, 75, will likely visit the grave of her former daughter-in-law, Princess Diana, for the first time since the 1997 car crash that took Diana's life. Discussions between the Queen and Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, 37, are being held, says the paper, which noted that should Her Majesty visit, it will mark the first time she has been to Spencer's family home of Althorp in the five years since Diana died. (The two women were said to have maintained a chilly relationship during Diana's marriage to Prince Charles.) The event would also mark a rapprochement between Queen Elizabeth and Spencer after his outspoken remarks at Diana's funeral, in which he made a thinly veiled assault on the Queen for removing the title of "royal highness" from his sister after her divorce from Prince Charles. Spencer described Diana as needing "no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic". Spencer and the Queen have been in contact for the past two weeks about the possibility of a private visit, said the Times, which suggested that the visit would actually occur on the very anniversary of Diana's death. It is also believed that Lord Fellowes, the Queen's former private secretary and Diana's brother-in-law, has played a behind-the-scenes role in bringing the two factions together informally. Meanwhile, according to the Associated Press, Queen Elizabeth announced on Sunday that her mother, the Queen Mum, 101, is "progressing" in her recovery from a bug she caught over Christmas. (The elder Elizabeth has been missing from public engagements since late November.) Speaking to well-wishers at the royal family's Sandringham estate in eastern England, QEII said of her mother, "She's coming along. She's progressing."
