The British have chimed in with their choices for the best films of 2001. Heading the list of nominees for the 2002 Orange British Academy Film Awards -- so called because they are sponsored by the Orange cell phone company -- are Australian director Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge" and New Zealand director Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." Each gleaned 13 nods, reports Reuters. In an effort to scoop the Oscars, which will be dispersed on March 24 at the new Kodak Theater in Hollywood, these awards will be presented Feb. 24 at the Odeon Theater in London's Leicester Square, 12 days after this year's Academy Award nominations are announced. Trailing "Moulin" and "Rings" are director Robert Altman's British mystery "Gosford Park" and the French sleeper hit "Amelie," each with nine nominations. "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," which is called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in the U.S., had eight. And though "A Beautiful Mind" has yet to open in England, it still nabbed five nominations, including best picture. Its star, Russell Crowe, who took the Golden Globe for best actor last week, is competing for the same prize against Ian McKellen ("The Lord of the Rings"), Kevin Spacey ("The Shipping News"), Tom Wilkinson ("In the Bedroom") and Golden Globe winner -- in the supporting category -- Jim Broadbent ("Iris"). For best actress: Nicole Kidman ("The Others"), Judi Dench ("Iris"), Sissy Spacek ("In the Bedroom"), Audrey Tautou ("Amelie") and Renee Zellweger ("Bridget Jones's Diary"). One nominee worth noting is Eddie Murphy, for his voiceover work as the smart-ass donkey in the computer-animated "Shrek."
