After discovering that a purportedly homophobic group is behind an Oscar-nominated documentary about adoption that she narrated, Rosie O'Donnell has demanded that the filmmakers remove her name and voice from the film, reports the Associated Press. The project is question, "Artists and Orphans: A True Drama," focuses on a New York theater group that visits the former Soviet republic of Georgia to assist orphaned and abandoned youngsters. O'Donnell, the mother of three adopted children and a vocal proponent of gays' adopting children, reportedly volunteered to narrate the short film. But her publicist, Cindi Berger, told the AP that it wasn't until this week that O'Donnell (who turns 40 today) discovered that the filmmakers are involved with the Fourth Way School. According to 1995 and 1996 reports in the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union, the group bans homosexuals and opposes gay people being parents. O'Donnell, who recently revealed publicly that she is gay, voiced her displeasure over being associated with the film on her talk show Wednesday. "If Rosie had known the truth about this organization, she never would have consented to lend her name and voice," said Berger. "Rosie is angry that the background wasn't disclosed to her." David Goldstein, a lawyer representing the film, told New York's Daily News that suggesting the documentary is "the work of some kind of nefarious cult is completely baseless." The film's director, Klapper McNally, did not respond to the AP's request for a comment.
