Big news out of the Executive Mansion on Tuesday. First the social news: "It's movie night at the White House," press secretary Ari Fleischer said, as quoted by Reuters. On the screen was the new, G-rated baseball story "The Rookie." In the audience was President Bush, who served as the host of the evening, as well as Dennis Quaid, the star of the movie, and Disney CEO Michael Eisner. In her review of the picture, PEOPLE critic Leah Rozen wrote, "'The Rookie' is an uncomplicated feel-good film based on the true-life story of ex-minor leaguer Jim Morris, a high school science teacher and baseball coach in Texas who at age 35 discovered he could fire a fastball at 98 mph. He tries out for the minors again, makes the cut and soon is hurling in the majors as a reliever for Tampa Bay's Devil Rays." In Tuesday's political news, Presidential counselor Karen P. Hughes, 45, one of the President's closest advisers throughout his entire political career (and considered in many circles to be the most powerful woman ever to work in the White House), announced that she will resign her position this summer, reports The Washington Post. "I want to take my family back home to Texas," she said, referring to husband Jerry and their 15-year-old son, Robert. NBC News on Wednesday morning reported that her decision sent "shock waves through the White House." She said at her announcement that she will continue to offer Bush strategic advice and will return to Washington regularly. The President told reporters that he can appreciate Hughes's putting family before service to the administration.
