As of midnight Tuesday, "Spider-Man" aficionados will be storming movie theaters to see their wall-crawling comic-book hero on the big screen, reports the Associated Press. But American moviegoers might ask, "What's wrong with this picture?" Answer: The movie is only going to be shown in Malaysia as of Wednesday morning, reports the news service, because of the huge comic-book fan base in that Southeast Asian country. Fans in the U.S. will have to wait until Friday, when the $100 million flick, starring Tobey Maguire, 26, as the Marvel Comic hero (geeky Peter Parker by day, suave and super-cool Spider-Man by night). Kirsten Dunst (who turns 20 today) plays romantic interest Mary Jane Watson, and Willem Dafoe, 46, comes to the fore as the villain, Green Goblin. According to AP, fans wearing T-shirts adorned with their hero began forming lines in front of Malaysian cineplexes first thing Tuesday morning. "This is the biggest movie of the year," one 32-year-old account executive who has been reading Spider-Man comic books since kindergarten told AP. "Some of us have been waiting for it all our lives." A spokesman for one multiplex in Kuala Lumpur's Subang Jaya suburb said that more than 1,300 tickets for the initial late-night screening had been sold. As of a few hours before show time, fewer than 100 were available. This weekend, Spider-Mania extends to a Spider-Man convention in Kuala Lumpur, where comic book auctions and superhero lookalike contests are scheduled.
