A press photo showing Britney Spears, 20, smoking, has surfaced in Thursday's New York Post. In the photo, the pop princess, wearing a pink tank top and scanty short shorts, is standing on a balcony of her hotel room in Sydney, Australia -- with a cigarette in her right hand. The Post reports that minutes before the camera's shutter clicked, Spears attempted to dash inside to hide her butt, but it was too late. Is this the image that Spears wishes to promote to her impressionable young fans? Contacted by the Post about the incident and the evidence, Spears's spokeswoman declined comment. Two years ago, notes the Post, Spears told the Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel, "I don't believe in drugs or even smoking." Spears, one of this year's 50 Most Beautiful People in the new issue of PEOPLE, has long preached clean living to her fans, insisting that she is still a virgin and never drinks or smokes. The Rev. David Kelly, pastor of the Louisiana church where the Spears family used to worship, granted an interview to Heat magazine, notes the Post, in which he said, "Smoking and drinking isn't what Christ wanted. It is disobedient." In reference to Spears, he added, "She is such a well-known person that we want her to continue being a good example of what it is to be a Baptist."
