Oscar winner Hilary Swank and husband Chad Lowe were among Monday night's crowd for the New York premiere of the Adrian Lyne film "Unfaithful," starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, who were also there, reports PEOPLE. The film is about a longtime married suburban couple (Gere and Lane) whose lives turn inside out when she embarks upon an affair with a younger man (Olivier Martinez). Gere, 52, who attended the opening with his longtime love, actress Carey Lowell, 41, admits the movie's intense subject matter made the actors want to shake off their characters quickly after a take. "We were doing (our roles) full out the whole time," said PEOPLE's 1999 Sexiest man Alive, "so it's fairly easy to let it go." Several reviews of the film say that Lane, 37, delivers a star-making performance. At the premiere, she told PEOPLE that there was no specific way in which she prepared for her role as a wayward wife. "It was like jumping out of an airplane," she said with a laugh. "How do you prepare for that?" She also claimed to be ill-prepared for watching the movie -- in which she spends a good part of the time unclothed -- with an audience. "I'm a little nervous," Lane said before the screening. "I will definitely sneak out early."
