Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nash Thursday refused to grant actor Robert Blake bail until a preliminary hearing reveals details of the evidence against him in the case of his wife's murder, reports the Associated Press. The jurist also pressed attorneys to set a date for a hearing soon, rejecting a suggestion by Blake's attorney Harland Braun that the lawyers will not be ready to proceed until November. Nash has slated another hearing for Aug. 27, reports AP, and he asked both sides to be ready for a preliminary hearing within 10 days after that. The ex-"Baretta" star, 68, has been behind bars since his April 18 arrest on charges of planning and executing the murder of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, 44, who was found shot to death in their car on May 4, 2001, while it was parked near a restaurant where they had dined. According to AP, Blake sat solemnly in the courtroom Thursday and frowned, answering "yes" only once when the judge asked whether or not he found the delay acceptable. Outside the courtroom, Braun told reporters that he believes the only reason the prosecution is keeping Blake in jail is because "it's easier to convict someone who's locked up." Deputy district attorney Patrick Dixon has dismissed that claim, notes Reuters, which quotes Dixon as having said that as a wealthy murder defendant, Blake represents a "flight risk" and should be denied bail.
