DIED: Legendary jazz bassist Ray Brown, 75, who played with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker -- and who was once married to legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald (who died in 1996) -- died in his sleep Tuesday in Indianapolis, where he was finishing a gig as part of a national concert tour, reports the AP. A friend told the news service that Brown took a nap and just never woke up. . . . AGREED: Christopher Reeve, 49, whose 1995 fall from a horse rendered him a quadriplegic, will appear in three ABC specials that will document his efforts to walk again, reports the Los Angeles Times. The first show will air this fall, with the remaining due to show his progress throughout the next two years. Reeve's son, Matthew, will direct the series, says the paper. . . . RESTORED: The original Stars and Stripes, 189 years old, which flew over Baltimore's Fort McHenry and served as the inspiration for Francis Scott Keys's "The Star-Spangled Banner," is being cleaned and fully restored by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, reports the Wall Street Journal.
