Surviving members of the seminal '60s rock band The Who, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, performed in public Monday night for the first time since Thursday's death of their longtime bassist, John Entwistle. Onstage at L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl, reports the Associated Press, Daltrey, 58, told the crowd after opening the show with the hits "I Can't Explain," and "Substitute": "I just wanted to say that tonight we played for John Entwistle. He was the true spirit of rock 'n' roll, and he lives on in the music we play." Entwistle, 57, who had been with the group for 38 years, died of an apparent heart attack in his Las Vegas hotel room a night before The Who's new North American tour was to have kicked off. British session player Pino Palladino, who previously had collaborated with Townshend on some solo projects, filled in for him at the Bowl and will continue on the tour. (The Who will reschedule the two dates that were postponed last weekend, a Vegas concert and one in Irvine, Calif.) At the Bowl, which was filled to capacity, the AP reports, fans stood for the group before they even played a note. Before the set kicked off, giant TV monitors displayed a video that showed the group rehearsing at Townshend's home nearly two weeks before Entwistle's death. Every time Entwistle was shown, the crowd cheered. As for Palladino, says the AP, he played the first few songs off to the side, often in shadow.
