ABC, which once wanted to shake up its late-night schedule by having CBS's David Letterman replace "Nightline" and Ted Koppel, is looking to maintain the status quo in its nightly newscast, according to published reports. The New York Times, among others, says the network is expected to extend its contract with "World News Tonight" anchor Peter Jennings, 64. Previously, there had been reports of Jennings' refusal to take a pay cut, which Disney-owned ABC was said to have requested. (Both ABC and Disney have suffered, respectively, in the ratings and in the stock market.) No salary figure is currently being mentioned in the latest reports. Meanwhile, on NBC, Tom Brokaw, 62, announced earlier this year that he would retire in two years, and at that time will be replaced by CNBC anchor Brian Williams, 43. Dan Rather, 70, currently remains at CBS.
