MOURNED: LaWanda Page, 81, who played the fearsome aunt Esther Anderson on the 1970s television comedy "Sanford & Son" (starring her childhood friend, Redd Foxx), died Saturday at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles from complications of diabetes, a friend tells AP. Page also starred in "Detective School" in 1979 and "B.A.D. Cats" in 1980.
BORN: Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates, 46, and his wife, Melinda, have welcomed their third child, Phoebe Adelle Gates, born Saturday at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in suburban Bellevue, Wash., reports AP. The baby weighed 9 lbs., 13 oz., said family spokeswoman Annemarie Hou. The other Gates children are Jennifer, 6, and Rory, 3.
CAST: ABC has recruited "Cheers" alum John Ratzenberger, 55, to play one of the nine Pennsylvania miners in the network's as-yet-untitled TV movie about July's miraculous rescue of the men who spent 80 hours trapped in a flooded shaft, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Marysa Ryan (Fox's "New York Undercover"), William Mapother ("In the Bedroom"), Brad Greenquist (Showtime's "Inherit the Wind"), Finn Carter ("Tremors"), Annie Corley ("Here on Earth") and Tom Robbin also have signed on for roles.
