Christy: Why She and Burns Are No More

Christy Turlington blames post-Sept. 11 trauma, in particular a fear of flying, as the cause of her unexpected split from "Sidewalks of New York" actor-director Ed Burns before they were to be wed a year ago.

On Oct. 17, 2001, PEOPLE.com reported that Turlington had merely postponed her wedding to Burns, 34, because of fears of more terror attacks. The nuptials, which had been set for late October in Italy, were then pushed back after the anthrax scare broke and, finally, the two simply went their separate ways for good.

"No matter where we chose (to get married), some people would still have to travel, so if this was our reason for postponing, then we would have to wait until it was safe for everyone," the supermodel, 32, tells Vogue in its October issue.

Turlington points a finger of blame at Burns and his family and friends, who refused to board a plane to Europe, although she also concedes that she, too, may have contributed to the bust-up.

Calling herself a "true Capricornian control freak" who wanted to go ahead with the ceremony -- despite the forces that were preventing it -- Turlington says she accepts culpability for refusing to relocate the wedding.
