Superior Court Commissioner Kirkland R. Nyby made the ruling in a Burbank courthouse during a five-minute hearing at which Sorkin, 41, was not present.
Afterwards, Sorkin's attorney, Steve Sitkoff, told reporters that his client has continued to work on the NBC drama from his Burbank office while receiving outpatient treatment. "He's trying to win another Emmy for his show," Sitkoff said.
"Here's how he said it: He can stand straight in his life now ... for the first time in a long time, he feels real good about himself," Sitkoff added.
Sorkin was arrested at the Burbank Airport on April 15, 2001, after security officers found small amounts of rock cocaine, marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms in his carry-on bag. He pleaded guilty two months later to one misdemeanor and two felony charges and was ordered to complete drug rehabilitation or face 44 months in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Meanwhile, Sorkin's 4-year-old show has been slipping in the ratings this season, compared to its previous stellar performance. Earlier this year, ABC's competing "The Bachelor" gave the Emmy-winning series a run for its ratings.
