ABC newswoman Barbara Walters named her "Ten Most Fascinating People of 2002" Wednesday night, and the most fascinating of them all was First Lady Laura Bush, who was the only surprise announcement of the evening.

All the other winners had been revealed earlier. (Walters's list of Fascinating People is not related to PEOPLE magazine's list of Most Intriguing People, but imitation is the sincerest form of attracting ratings.)

The rest of the Walters Top 10 included the following: The Osbournes, Halle Berry, Winter Olympics gold medal figure skater Sarah Hughes, "Spider-Man" star Tobey Maguire, diet specialist Dr. Robert Atkins, syndicated TV star Dr. Phil McGraw, Enron senior vice president Sherron Watkins, Maryland's Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose and England's embattled Queen Elizabeth.

Berry, 36, was selected for being, among other things, the first African American woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress. Hughes, 17, was cited for having entered her competition as the underdog.

Maguire, 27, overcame obstacles, too, telling Walters: "Me and my Mom would go into a grocery store and get groceries and pay for them with food stamps, and I would run out of the store embarrassed."
