Even Michael Jackson lasted longer than this.
Actor Nicolas Cage and wife Lisa Marie Presley are separating after three short months of marriage. Cage, 38, filed the divorce papers Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court under his real name Nicolas Coppola, citing irreconcilable differences, the Associated Press reports.
"I'm sad about this, but we shouldn't have been married in the first place," Presley said in a statement issued by her publicist, Paul Bloch.
In his own statement, Cage said, "I did not comment on the marriage, I am not going to comment on the divorce."
The split comes as something of a surprise, considering the pair was seen together just this past weekend at the screening of Cage's forthcoming film, "Adaptation" (in theaters Dec. 6).
The whirlwind marriage began in August, when Cage and Presley, 34, were wed during a secret ceremony in Hawaii. The couple tied the knot on the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. (Lisa Marie is Presley's only child.)
This marked the second marriage for Cage and the third for Presley, whose previous husbands include Jackson (who lasted a little more than a year with Presley until their separation in 1995) and musician Danny Keough, whose six-year union produced two children. Cage was married to actress Patricia Arquette from 1995 until 2000.
Cage, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor for 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas," met Presley in 2000 at a time he when was estranged from Arquette. Presley was engaged to musician John Oszajca, but by May 2001, Cage and Presley had become a regular Hollywood couple.
Cage has one son from a previous relationship, AP reports.
