PASSAGES: Moore 'Rings' in New Year
ENGAGED: After 6 1/2 years of living in unwedded bliss with director Bart Freundlich, 32, and bearing him two children (Caleb, 5, and Liv, 9 months), "The Hours" and "Far from Heaven" star Julianne Moore, 42, finally has a ring on her finger, reports PEOPLE. Yep, "they are engaged," says a source close to the couple. No official date has been set for the nuptials.
WED: Golden Globe nominated "Six Feet Under" actress Rachel Griffiths married artist Andrew Taylor in front of 140 guests in a candlelit New Year's Eve ceremony in Melbourne, her publicist tells Australian news services. The couple had been engaged for nine months. Griffiths, 34, and Taylor had been friends for 17 years. Tuesday's full Catholic mass ceremony was officiated by Griffiths's uncle, a Jesuit priest, the Rev. Father Andrew Hamilton.
ALSO WED: Australia's "Lord Of The Rings" star Miranda Otto, 35, married actor boyfriend Peter O'Brien, 42, at Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral on New Year's Eve. The 90-minute service left regular churchgoers outside in the rain while the private ceremony took place, according to local news reports, O'Brien, in a black suit with a white shirt and black tie, topped off with a yellow carnation, was said to have been smiling broadly as he mingled with guests. Otto, who plays Eowyn in the J.R.R. epic, wore a white silk dress with a white veil and blue and yellow flowers.
REVIVED: Returning from a two-year hiatus, the Vermont jam band Phish played a long, high-energy show at Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve, with some fans paying more than $1,000 to get into the sold-out concert, the Associated Press reports. Tom Hanks, 46, made a surprise stage appearance, and as the clock struck midnight costumed dancers on stilts spread through the audience and fake snow and white balloons tumbled from the rafters.
RAPPED: Rapper DMX, 32, was forced to cancel two Canadian concerts after immigration officials refused to let him get off his flight when he landed in Calgary last weekend, reports AP. He was detained overnight in a holding cell and left the country Sunday. Promoter Stephen Deere of Alliance Soundcrew said DMX "was aggressive toward the immigration officer, and he was detained." Meanwhile, rapper 50 Cent (real name: Curtis Jackson) was arrested outside a New York nightclub Tuesday after police say they found two pistols in his SUV, MTV News reports. Jackson, 27, was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. His lawyer and spokesperson were not available for comment.
