SAG Nominees: The Moore the Merrier
Julianne Moore picks up two nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while "Chicago" takes five nods and Meryl Streep gets dissed.
Originally posted Tuesday January 28, 2003 03:56 PM EST
Meryl Streep didn't get a mention -- except as part of the ensemble cast of "The Hours" and "Adaptation" -- and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" landed a slot that probably should have gone to "Gangs of New York," but it was basically the usual suspects as the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominees for the acting union's ninth annual SAG Awards.
The SAG nominations -- announced Tuesday morning in Los Angeles and honoring performances in movies and TV -- serve as yet another indicator of how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may cast its collective votes by Oscar night March 23.
The stars of "Chicago" led the movie nominations with five, as Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere (both of whom took home Golden Globes) were nominated as leading actor and actress in a feature film, while Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones were named in the supporting actress race.
The "Chicago" ensemble also is up for the group award, as are the casts of "Adaptation," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and "Greek Wedding." The nomination for the low-budget comedy meant there was no room in the category for the cast of Scorsese's all-star epic.
Both Julianne Moore and Kathy Bates received two nominations; Moore for her supporting role in "The Hours" and her leading role in "Far from Heaven," and Bates for her supporting actress roles in the feature movie "About Schmidt" and for the TV film "My Sister's Keeper."
The other leading movie actress contenders, besides Zellweger and Moore, are Salma Hayek ("Frida"), Nicole Kidman ("The Hours") and Diane Lane ("Unfaithful"). Streep, in "The Hours," was the overlooked actress there, but the film ended up with four SAG nominations in all.
Besides Gere, the leading movie actor nominees are Adrien Brody ("The Pianist"), Nicolas Cage ("Adaptation"), Daniel Day-Lewis ("Gangs") and Jack Nicholson ("Schmidt").
In the TV categories, one surprise had Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes -- rather than Eric McCormack and Debra Messing -- landing nominations for leading performances in a comedy series for their work on "Will & Grace." Hayes also got a nod for the TV movie "Martin & Lewis," while his costar, Jeremy Northam (who played Dean Martin to Hayes's Jerry Lewis), was bypassed.
"Friends" joined the casts of "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Frasier," "Sex and the City" and "Will & Grace" in the comedy ensemble category, but only Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc were singled out for leading comedy role nominations.
In the dramatic show category, the casts of "24," "CSI," "Six Feet Under," "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing" made the cut for the ensemble award.
The SAG ceremony will air March 9 at 8 p.m. on TNT. PEOPLE magazine is one of the sponsors of the post-awards gala, which will benefit the SAG Foundation.
