"Rings," which is a box-office smash, also was cited by Web writers for its ensemble acting, editing, visual effects and sound.
"Far from Heaven," the heavily art-directed homage to Ross Hunter melodramas of the '50s, actually won the most awards, including best actress honors for Julianne Moore and best supporting actor for Dennis Quaid.

Daniel Day-Lewis -- who is likely to give Jack Nicholson ("About Schmidt"), Richard Gere ("Chicago), Adrien Brody ("The Pianist") and Michael Caine ("The Quiet American") the stiffest competition for the Best Actor Oscar -- was named best actor for his role as Bill the Butcher in Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York," while Samantha Morton took supporting actress honors for Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report," which starred Tom Cruise.
