'Friends,' Hope Grab Laughs, Viewers
NBC sitcoms and a Bob Hope special rate high on the laugh meter and in last week's Nielsen ratings, but "American Idol" remains No. 1.

There was no generation gap in the laughs department on NBC last week, with "Friends," "Will & Grace," "Scrubs" and a Bob Hope birthday special -- the comic landmark turns 100 on May 29, so this marked an early tribute -- all proving themselves still relevant in the Nielsen ratings.
Although the Hope show didn't land in the Top 10 (it came in at No. 18), it was viewed by 12.6 million people on Sunday and was the week's highest rated special. Another NBC retro comedy show, focusing such female TV pioneers as Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett, was seen by 10 million people.
As far as the most-watched networks are concerned, NBC and FOX finished in a virtual dead heat last week among the 18-to-49-year-old demographic coveted by advertisers, although the latter network had the No. 1 show. That was Tuesday's edition of "American Idol."
For the week of April 14-20, the Top 10 shows were as follows:
1. "American Idol," Tuesday, FOX, 20 million viewers
2. "CSI," CBS, 19.1 million
3. "Friends," NBC, 18.2 million
4. "American Idol," Wednesday, FOX, 18.1 million
5. "Everybody Loves Raymond," CBS, 17.7 million
6. "Law & Order," NBC, 15.5 million
7. "CSI: Miami," CBS, 14.9 million
8. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," NBC, 14.8 million
9. "Will & Grace," NBC, 14.7 million
10. "Scrubs," NBC, 14.7 million
