Huge-screen movie company Imax has announced that the upcoming "Matrix" films, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" -- both starring Reeves -- will be released on Imax's humongous screen format to accompany the standard theatrical releases debuting this year, says the Hollywood Reporter.
The Imax version of "The Matrix Reloaded" will open two to three weeks after the film's May 15 release in standard 35mm, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman tells the trade paper. (Warners, like PEOPLE, is part of AOL Time Warner.)
But the Imax version of the later "The Matrix Revolutions" will open the very same day as the standard version of film's Nov. 5 theatrical release, marking the first time a Hollywood event film is simultaneously released in both formats.
"The Matrix" films are the third and fourth "regular" movies to get blown up to Imax size. The others were "Apollo 13" and "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" last year.
Disney's "Fantasia 2000" premiered in Imax and was then shown in regular formats, while the current Imax attraction, in 3-D, is "Titanic" director James Cameron's "Ghosts of the Abyss."
