He was a boy, she was a girl -- and the rest is history. Now, Avril Lavigne's hit teen anthem "Sk8er Boi" is getting turned into a feature film, says the Hollywood Reporter.

The single is from the 18-year-old Canadian sensation's 2002 album "Let Go," which sold 5 million copies. Paramount Pictures has optioned the song and signed writer-producer David Zabel, who credits include TV's "ER," "JAG" and "Dark Angel," to adapt its lyrics into a screenplay. MTV Films will be one of the producers, the trade paper reports.

The song centers on a high-school girl who "does ballet" and yields to peer pressure in rejecting a skater boy despite his crush on her -- and despite her liking him. Years later she comes to regret her decision, when he becomes a music star "rockin' up MTV."

Whether there are autobiographical elements to this tale is anyone's guess.

Earlier this year, Lavigne -- a self-proclaimed tomboy who grew up the middle of three children -- told PEOPLE: "I don't really have much of a private life. I'm having fun. I have my band and my friends. I don't feel like I'm missing anything."

As of yet, no stars have been mentioned in connection with the leading roles, but the studio promises to remain true to the spirit of the song.

Scott Spock, Lauren Christy and Graham Edwards, who co-wrote the song with Lavigne and produced it, are set to serve as consultants on the screenplay.
