Matt, Ben Subjects of Stage Spoof

Longtime buddies Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are headed for the stage.

Well, not exactly. A play about the two Hollywood heartthrobs is coming to the New York stage, but there's a catch: The title roles will be played by women.

This bit of playfulness comes via Broadway director David Warren, who, according to Playbill On-Line, will helm a revival of "Matt & Ben," which reportedly proved a hit at last year's New York International Fringe Festival.

"Matt & Ben" is scheduled to be performed at the non-profit P.S. 122 theater from July 28 through Sept. 6.

Written and performed by two women, Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers, the show pokes fun at Damon and Affleck and takes place "before J.Lo, before Gwyneth, before 'Project Greenlight,' before Oscar. ... before anyone actually gave a damn," say the creators.

"When the screenplay for 'Good Will Hunting' drops mysteriously from the heavens, the boys realize they're being tested by a Higher Power," they add.

Director Warren's credits include several plays by Nicky Silver and Richard Greenberg; the latter won this year's best play Tony for his gay-themed baseball drama, "Take Me Out."

Since its New York premiere in 2002, reports Playbill, "Matt & Ben" has been produced at the HBO-sponsored U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, in Aspen, Colo., and has toured the country. (HBO, like PEOPLE, is part of AOL Time Warner.)
