Actress, singer and rock 'n' roll widow Courtney Love isn't a Brando after all, it seems.

Love, 39, found herself in the news last week after a British paper reported a tryst between 79-year-old big-screen legend Marlon Brando and Love's maternal grandmother, novelist Paula Fox -- but Love's mom says it ain't so, the Associated Press reports.

Initial reports claimed the bombshell comes from a memoir by Love's mom, therapist Linda Carroll, which is due for publication in 2005 from Doubleday. Carroll, however, emphatically denies the reports. "First of all, it's crazy, it's not true," she told the Gazette-Times in Corvallis, Ore. "Second of all, my book doesn't say that."

Love, the widow of pioneering grunge rocker Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994, was quoted as saying she was "incredibly shocked" by the reports, AP said. Carroll said she hadn't spoken to her daughter about it.

The Hole frontwoman became a pop-culture figure as Cobain's wife, and later widow, but earned critical respect with her own band, Hole, and as an actress in films including "The People vs. Larry Flynt" (1996) and "Man on the Moon," the 1999 Andy Kaufman biopic.
