You, Too, Can Live Like a Simpson

According to Thursday's Wall Street Journal, Homer and his brood did well to live in Springfield, which is the second most-popular town name in the United States. (The first: Fairview.)
And while it's never been clear which state the Simpsons live in -- the same held true for the vintage '50s sitcom "Father Knows Best," also set in a Springfield -- there are at least three states that Springfieldians can call home: Massachusetts, Ohio and Oregon.
To show how ordinary residents might fare living like a Simpson, the Journal assessed what the prospective homeowner might get for his or her money in the various Springfields. Ohio seems to offer the most.
In the Midwestern Springfield, $254,000 can purchase a 3-bedroom, 2-1/2-bathroom, 2,450-sq.-ft. house with a fireplace and a small creek in the backyard.
By comparison, the housing choice in Springfield, Mass., will cost you $249,000 but only get you 1,566 square feet (3 bedrooms and 1-1/2 baths, but also a small lake and a swimming pool), while Oregon's Springfield offers, for $275,000, 1,950 square feet (3 bedrooms, 3 baths and a hot tub).
And for good measure, the Journal notes that Nancy Cartwright, who provides the voice of Bart Simpson, comes from Kettering, Ohio, near Springfield, and Oregon is the home state of "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening -- though he hails from Portland, not Springfield.
