Nick & Jessica Renew 'Newlyweds' Vow
Forget Ralph and Alice Kramden. TV has its found its new breed of honeymooners: pop stars Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson.
The ditzy singer and her long-suffering hubby, who have become reality-TV sensations with their behind-the-marriage MTV series, "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica," have agreed to keep the cameras rolling for a second season, the network announced Monday.
Scoffed at by critics and audiences alike, the show follows the attractive twosome in and around their Calabasas, Calif., home. It's been a ratings hit for MTV, thanks to some memorably daffy comments from Simpson.
Take, for instance, the very first episode, when Simpson, 23, confessed her confusion over the contents of her meal. "Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish?" she asks Lachey, 29. "I know it's tuna, but it says 'Chicken by the Sea.' "
Other times, Simpson wondered aloud where buffalo wings came from (chickens or buffalo?), she managed to spend $750 for two bras and two pairs of panties without first asking the price. And she's also shown that she can burp (and do more) on cue.
The finale of the first season of "Newlyweds" is scheduled to air Oct. 21 at 10:30 p.m., five days before the couple's one-year anniversary. New episodes will kick off in 2004.
In other MTV news, the network has announced it is bringing back "Doggy Fizzle Televizzle," Snoop Dogg's variety show, for a second season next year, and the long-running (12 seasons) "Road Rules" is also due to come back, the Associated Press reports.
On Snoop's series, which airs Sundays at 10 p.m., the 31-year-old rapper-actor performs sketches, pulls pranks, interviews celebrities and introduces musical guests.
