Slater in Stitches Thanks to Wife
Christian Slater required 20 stitches to the back of his head after his wife, Ryan Haddon, allegedly hurled a drinking glass at him during an argument at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on Monday, police tell Reuters.
Haddon, who has been married to the actor since February 2000, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery, though Slater declined to press charges, says Las Vegas police spokeswoman Carla Alston.
It's now up to prosecutors to decide whether to pursue a case against Haddon.
Haddon, who reportedly left the scene immediately after the fight, returned to the Hard Rock after her husband went to the hospital. She was then taken into custody, booked at the Clark County Detention Center and later released, Alston said.
Slater, 34, initially told police that his wife threw the glass at him during an argument but "changed his story and said it was an accident" when he realized she would end up in jail, Alston told Reuters, adding that Slater's revised version of the incident defied credibility -- because the glass struck Slater on the back of the head behind his left ear and created a gash so large as to require 20 stitches.
A spokeswoman for Slater told Reuters that he received only nine stitches. The actor has declined to comment publicly on what happened. His publicist said he was on his way to Vancouver, British Columbia, to begin a new movie on Wednesday.
In 1998, Slater was sentenced to 90 days in jail for slugging his then-girlfriend and biting a security officer in a drug- and alcohol-fueled brawl, Reuters noted.
In 1994, he was arrested at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when an unloaded pistol was discovered in his luggage. In 1989, he was convicted of drunken driving after crashing his automobile into a telephone pole.
