No Police Charges Against Slater's Wife
The wife of actor Christian Slater will not face any criminal charges related to an alleged Las Vegas hotel-room scuffle last month that injured her husband, prosecutors tell the Associated Press.
Clark County District Attorney David Roger said there's no proof that TV producer Ryan Haddon, who has been married to the actor since February 2000, intended to hurt Slater, 34, when she struck him with a drinking glass on Nov. 10 at the Hard Rock hotel-casino.
"We did not feel we could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she committed intentional battery," Roger said. "Both the victim and the defendant maintained that it was an accident."
"Clearly there was no criminal wrongdoing," Haddon's lawyer, David Chesnoff, said Wednesday.
Police in Nevada investigate domestic violence cases even if the alleged victim doesn't want to press charges.
On Nov. 10, according to reports, Haddon, who reportedly left the scene immediately after the fight, returned to the Hard Rock after her husband went to the hospital. She was then taken into custody, booked at the Clark County Detention Center and later released, said Las Vegas police spokeswoman Carla Alston.
Slater initially told police that his wife threw a glass at him during an argument but "changed his story and said it was an accident" when he realized she would end up in jail, Alston told Reuters in November, adding that Slater's revised version of the incident defied credibility -- because the glass struck Slater on the back of the head behind his left ear and created a gash so large as to require 20 stitches.
A spokeswoman for Slater told Reuters at the time that he received only nine stitches. The actor declined to comment publicly on what happened.
In 1998, Slater was sentenced to 90 days in jail for slugging his then-girlfriend and biting a security officer in a drug- and alcohol-fueled brawl, Reuters noted.
In 1994, he was arrested at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when an unloaded pistol was discovered in his luggage. And in 1989, he was convicted of drunken driving after crashing his automobile into a telephone pole.
